From The Associate Vicar: Embodiment in Worship

Dear One’s of St. C’s,

This Lent at St. C’s we would like to put a special focus on embodiment in worship.  Episcopalians make a point to actively involve our bodies in worship.  Worship is not an intellectual activity, it is about being present with God in mind, body, and spirit.  This is why we sit down, stand up, cross ourselves, bow, and walk towards the altar for communion.  This how we invite our bodies into worship.

During Lent we want to heighten this awareness.  Be aware of how it feels to walk with others to receive the bread and wine, to bow towards one another as we begin and end worship, and how the peace feels different during a time when some people don’t feel safe being touched. Notice how all these actions feel in your body.  We are going to encourage people to put the palm of their hands out and up during the Lord’s prayer and see if that impacts your connection with God.  (This worshipful position pre-dates Christianity and is called orans posture <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wik...>).  Also, think about where and why you do or do not participate in the sign of the cross.  All of these actions are optional, especially if you are in pain or have any sort of disability that prevents you from participating comfortably.

Our bodies hold a lot on our behalf and they need to be tended to as well.  We hope that in worship you feel as though all of you can fully participate and connect with God, that through our gestures and actions we would find healing, comfort, and acceptance.

with care,

Meghan
