From the Associate Vicar: The Cross
Dear Ones of St.C’s,
On this Good Friday we remember the symbol of the cross as a symbol of death. This symbol that once stood for death, destruction, and fear and control from the state. Today we remember why the cross stood for that. People used to be executed, nailed to crosses, and left to die. This was the way that God asked Jesus to die. This would be God’s plan to save the world.
Many theologians have debated why this had to be and what this means for the world. But today I just want us to reflect on the cross. What has it come to mean to you? When you see the Celtic cross outside our church, or you notice a cross on a necklace, or when an acolyte processes around the church carrying a cross, what has the cross come to mean to you? And how does reflecting on the history of that symbol deepen the present day meaning?
Jesus took a symbol of death and torment and transformed the meaning of this symbol to stand for love, mercy, forgiveness, grace, and new life. This is what God does. God came to earth to redeem and transform all order of things in order that we would be reconciled to God and to one one another.
I hope you will join us tonight at 6:30pm at the church or in your home to take time together to grieve the death of Jesus and venerate the cross together as a community.
with hope,
Meghan
