The Fifth Sunday After Pentecost: Freedom For All
The Rev. Meghan Mullarkey
The Fifth Sunday After Pentecost
Text: Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
After Meghan received feedback from a person of color about this sermon she has respectfully added this trigger warning: This sermon discusses Jesus use of the a yoke in Matthew. Meghan explores what the cost of racism in the United States has on people by using the feeling of a heavy yoke around one's neck in comparison with the yoke that Jesus offers us - which is easy and light. A yoke is traditionally used on animals and the idea of a yoke around ones neck could be triggering, especially in light of discussing slavery in this country and how black people were often seen by their oppressors as less than human.
