Welcome to the Season of Advent at St. Columba’s Church
Advent: generally, the noun advent is used for the introduction of something important. At St. Columba’s this is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and this year we want to involve everyone.
During this season our church looks a little different each Sunday as we come to worship. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we generally have cut flowers each Sunday. We are blessed with an abundance of dahlias and mums in our garden area. I, Sandy, have been making the bouquets each week, along with help from Portia. However, during Advent there are not any decorating our worship area. So here’s what we will be doing…
Starting the first week of Advent we will decorate an Advent wreath. This year we would like to involve all families, parishioners and guests worshipping with us to build the wreath by adding items we have for you in a basket. Each Sunday in Advent everyone is invited to come forward to add the decorations we have for that week and reflect on the theme for the week. There will be instructions for you each Sunday.
We are excited as this will be a meaningful time for all of us to participate in decorating our worship area and help us to prayerfully think on each weekly theme of Advent.
1st Sunday in Advent - Stay awake
we will add sticks, branches and rocks
2nd Sunday in Advent - Prepare the way
we will add pine cones and greenery
3rd Sunday in Advent - Anticipating the joy that is coming
we will add holly branches and a bit of color, along with the pink candle for this week
4th Sunday - Mary and the humanity and divinity of Jesus
we will add star hangings
