From the Associate Vicar: Advent Traditions

Dear One's of St. C's,

Our hope at St. Columba's is that whether you live alone or with others that you would engage in the season of Advent in some way at home.  The kids in your life are most likely already excited about Christmas, try to channel their excitement.  If you have kids of your own try to integrate Advent into their already present excitement.

This is the time of year where we practice waiting, anticipating, and making space.  Whether it is making space for new presents in our home or making space for God, these two things tap into the same action, making space.  While we make space for joy and celebration in December, let’s use these feelings and think about our spiritual formation.

As we make space for Christmas - decorate our homes, wrap presents, go shopping, cook meals, declutter in anticipation for gifts, let’s also think about, how do we make space for God? How do we anticipate Jesus’ arrival? How do we prepare to welcome Jesus into our lives?

Traditional ways to build on this excitement are to light an Advent Wreath at dinner time and to have an Advent Calendar you do each day until Christmas.  While you participate in these activities, this is a great time to think through how you experience anticipation, waiting, and making room for God and Jesus’ arrival.

I'd love it if you shared with St. C's the ways you live into this Advent Season by posting pictures to facebook/instagram and tagging St. C's or emailing pictures to me that I will post on our social media pages.  My family will make sure to do the same!

with hope and blessings,

Meghan
