From the Associate Vicar: Imagine a Different End to Thanksgiving
Dear One’s of St. C’s,
This last Sunday I preached about the need to have an eschatological imagination, a belief in the coming promises of God. There are more and more activists and scholars who believe that if we cannot imagine a just world then we will be unable to be a part of making it come into being. I am beginning to believe more and more that a part of our work as Christians is to be able to imagine a world made whole. This world that God longs for and calls us to join them in creating. A world where all are loved, cared for, and know safety and joy. We will continue to explore this idea throughout Advent.
As we enter into celebrating Thanksgiving this year, I wonder if we could use our imagination, to imagine what that first Thanksgiving may have been like. And then to imagine a world where the settlers responded differently to the Native People of this land, who joined them in this initial feast. What if these two groups of people had seen and honored their differences? What if they had shown each respect and dignity and figured out a way to live side by side? What would this land look like today? How would we live differently? What would our relationship to the land and to one another be? Can you imagine this world? I encourage you to spend some time imagining this world and listening to Native voices as we join together with our friends and family this Thanksgiving. Let us wonder about, to who do we give thanks this year and how do we live into this gratitude.
with hope for what will be,
Meghan
